Some dandy, yet deceptively simple tricks will transform even the plainest gingerbread house into a showplace. How about stained glass windows in your church or a shimmering frozen pond, complete with ice skaters? Piece of cake!

Window glass and ponds

Sugar candies do something marvelous when heated — they melt. Keep heating and they caramelize, creating the effect, when cooled, of murky glass. To make glass-like windows or frozen ponds, melt hard candies on foil-covered baking sheets in the oven and let cool.

For a stained glass effect, crush colored hard candies and make little piles of three or more different colors right next to each other on the foil. As they melt they will merge together. Use enough candy so that the finished puddle will be slightly larger than the opening that needs glass.

When the glass cools, attach by heavily icing the inside of the window cutout and pressing the glass into place. Allow to dry before handling the piece.
